I cannot deny

As a part of “Hello, World!” chapter from “Bilingual Family Songs of the Mirvisesthe song
addresses the question: “What’s around?”: The ocean of unknowns, small things, pets,
nature, priorities.
This song is about priorities. Everything seems very important in life: carrier, job, money,
attractiveness, friends, and a lot of other things. What is the most important of all? May be
something that you cannot replace or buy?

Everything is original in this song: the poem, the music, and the translation. First it was a
poem written in English, in the form of a slightly humorous, sincere letter to a young person
who seemed to know the world to some degree but was still in search of her path in life. Ten
years later the poem was set to music, and just recently it translated into Russian.

The song is composed in a somewhat theatrical form of parental duet, in which they alternate
lines while singing about various things that are important to a teenager. The warm narrative
style and gentle pace of the smooth melody suggests that the genre can be identified as similar
to a bard song.
The audience can join in the refrain lines, forming the echoing choir of “friends and family”.
Verse by verse, the song moves toward the conclusion: “What is it that can make us happy?”
In 2018 the song received 10/10 for originality in the Great American Song Contest.

The illustration is a famous painting “Woman at a mirror” (1652) by Gerard ter Borch, located
in the Dutch National Museum in Amsterdam.

Эта песня о приоритетах. В жизни все кажется очень важным: карьера, работа, деньги,
привлекательность, друзья, и многое другое. Что же важнее всего? Может то, что
невозможно заменить или купить?

В этой песне все оригинально: и слова, и перевод и музыка. Сначала появилось
стихотворение на английском языке в форме немного шуточного, но искреннего письма
подростку, который уже в некоторой степени познал мир, но всё ещё в поиске. Десять
лет спустя появилась музыка, и совсем недавно песня была переведена на русский язык.

Построенная в «театральной» форме дуэта родителей, которые по-очереди поют о
важных для подростка вещах, песня получилась весьма необычная и вполне семейнаяю
Слушатели, охотно подпевая на последних строках куплета, образуют «хор» друзей и
родных. Теплый доверительный тон, умеренный темп и плавная мелодия приближают
песню по стилю к бардовской. С каждым четверостишьем, шаг за шагом, песня
приводит нас к выводу: что же является достаточным условием для счастья.

В 2018 году песня получила 10/10 за оригинальность на конкурсе «Great American
Songs».

На обложке - знаменитая картина Жерара тер Борха «Женщина у зеркала» (1652),
находящяся в Национальном музее Нидерландов в Амстердаме.
