Macavity

As a part of the “Hello, World!” group #2 of “Bilingual Family Songs of the Mirvises”, a song
typically addresses to (lifelong) question of newcomer: “What’s around?”: the ocean of
unknowns? small thing? Pets? Nature? Priorities?

Pets… All children love pets. But some pet-like animals have unfriendly personality; they can
be vicious and even untidy. The cats in this famous poem act like human-criminals, and in such
a deceitful feline manner that even Scotland Yard police fails to ever catch them.

The poem comes from T.S. Eliot’s “Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats”. To dedicate a book
to pets, one must be very fond of them! The poet loved cats but could never completely solve
the mystery of their character and behavior. Eliot often gave his fictional cats most incredible
names (“Mungojerrie and Griddlebone”).
In the 1980’s Andrew Lloyd Weber used the “Possum’s Book” for his famed musical “Cats”.
Knowing this, we wouldn’t be so daring to present our “Macavity” song if not the fact that…
Eugene wrote it in the late 1970-s! He was captured by the Eliot’s poem (in the Russian
translation of S. Marshak) and couldn’t refrain from composing this catchy rhythmical song.

To bring it to a proper song format we had to slightly adapt and abridge the poem. This is why
we use the word “libretto”, like for a miniature show.

Как часть раздела №2 «Здравствуй, мир!» из «Двуязычных семейных песен Мирвиcов»,
песня отвечает на вопрос новичка: «Что вокруг?»,- Океан неизвестности? Вещи?
Животные? Приоритеты?
Питомцы… Все дети их любят. Но некоторые из домашние животных весьма
недружелюбны и неопрятны. Кошки в этом знаменитом стихотворении ведут себя как
преступники и так хитро, что даже полиция Скотланд-Ярда не может их поймать.

Т.С.Элиота. Чтобы посвятить книгу домашним животным, нужно их очень любить! Поэт
любил кошек, но никогда не мог полностью разгадать тайну их характера. Поэтому
Элиот часто давал своим вымышленным котам самые невероятные имена («Mungojerrie
and Griddlebone»).

В 1980-х годах Эндрю Ллойд Вебер использовал «Книгу Поссума» для своего
знаменитого мюзикла «Кошки». Зная это, мы не осмелились бы представить нашу песню
«Macavity», если бы не тот факт, что… Евгений написал ее в конце 1970-х! Он был
впечатлен стихотворением Элиота в переводе С. Маршака и сочинил эту
запоминающуюся ритмичную песню.
Чтобы привести ее к песенному формату, стихотворение пришлось немного
адаптировать и сократить. Вот почему мы используем слово «либретто», как для
миниатюрного шоу.
